He describes himself as a simple Buddhist monk. He is the spiritual leader of Tibet. He was born on July 6, 1935, in a peasant family, located in the Taktser village in Amdo, northeast of Tibet.

At the age of two, he was recognized as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama, Thubten Gyatso. He began his studies at the age of six and, at twenty-five, obtained the title of geshe lharampa (doctor of Buddhist philosophy).

The Dalai Lama is a spiritual leader who is dedicated to preserving the tradition of Mahayana doctrine, while publicly embracing the ideals of democracy and pacifism, and works for humanitarian and ecological causes. He travels around the world promoting universal values, such as respect for others; universal responsibility; patience and tolerance. His teachings focus on developing compassion and kindness towards all beings.
